To keep up with the times, SanDisk release two portable SSDs that should peek an interest of some people. The Extreme 500 is a SSD-based external drive that allows transfer speed up to 415MB/s. The Extreme 500 uses a black finish casing but with rubber bumpers to provide protection for a storage unit with no moving parts and a ring to clip on a bag.
These are available in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB variant for Rs. 8,490/-, Rs. 12,990/- and 22,990/- MRP. Currently, it’s not available via Indian based online sites, but the 120GB and 240GB variant are already available in the US for $99.92 and $148.63. The 120GB and the 240GB are available in Newegg for USD 99.99 and 149.99.

Along with the Extreme 500, there’s the future ready external storage drive- the Extreme 900. SanDisk Extreme 900 is one very serious storage drive. With a variant of 480GB, 960GB and a 1.92TB (I know, right?) uses USB 3.1 Type A and Type C and also has the required cables bundled with the pack. According to company’s testing, it provides speeds transfers up to 850 MB/s. The unit uses aluminum casing and rubber to provide additional shock-absorption though truth be told SSD’s non-moving parts takes care of that.
The Indian MRP is equally eye raising, with 480GB, 960GB and 1.92TB variants will be under Rs. 35,990/-, 53,990 and Rs. 89,990/-. It’s not yet sold in Amazon India or US, but the 480GB, 960GB and 1.92TB variants are sold in Amazon UK:
On a different note, I really wish that SanDisk has a ‘portable SSD’ variant similar to WD My Passport Wireless. Though I am not really too keen on seeing WiFi unless its AC type, this will really help photographers and videographers since it allows them to transfer data (copy or cut-paste) from an SD card to the drive once inserted. Because of this, the user will not require the need to have a PC or a notebook just to transfer the data. The SSD variant will naturally end up giving better battery life and sequential transfer speed over the mechanical variant. Something that SanDisk can really pull off.
There is no update regards to any M.2 or PCIe drives.
